For others, it was a wrenching time of weighing Virginia ties versus national ties to Union. For African-Americans, it represented a fearful opportunity—a chance for freedom yet inherently fraught with huge risk and potential destruction.
The timeline helps us understand the role that Loudoun County played in one of the most significant events in American history.

The Civil War in Loudoun County
The Civil War in Loudoun County, situated in Northern Virginia just 25 miles from Washington, D.C. typefied the war on the borderland, where citizens divided loyalties between North and South, and divided families as well. Battles fought in and around Loudoun during the war include the 1861 Battle of Ball's Bluff, the 1862 Loudoun Valley Campaign and battle of Unison, and the 1863 Cavalry Battles at Upperville, Middleburg and Aldie. Loudoun's Civil War personalities include John Singleton Mosby, called the "Gray Ghost of the Confederacy" for his daring nighttime raids on Federal supply, transportation and communication routes. Loudoun is also the perfect base for exploring the Civil War sites of the mid-Atlantic region including Gettysburg, Antietam, Harpers Ferry, Manassas, and Fredericksburg.
